Poker players to get seized cash

players who had cash seized by police in a raid at a private club in Belfast at the weekend should get their money back, a magistrate has ruled.

Police had lodged a Proceeds of Crime application at Belfast Magistrates Court to retain the money as evidence.

More than £23,000 was seized during a search of the Cavendish Club on Corporation Street on Saturday, along with other gambling equipment.

A game was taking place in the club at the time.

Legal threat over police poker raid

Another story from the BBC:

A Belfast club owner has said he is considering legal action after police raided a game and seized more than £20,000.

Dozens of PSNI officers in riot gear entered the Cavendish Club in the city centre at the weekend and broke up the card game.

They ordered up to 200 players - including doctors and lawyers - to stop playing.

They are now demanding their money back from the police and believe they were doing nothing illegal.

College gambles on casino classes

Students are getting the chance to train as super croupiers in Britain’s first gaming academy.

Blackpool and Fylde College has built its own training casino which will be opened officially next month.

Courses ranging from GCSE to foundation courses for degrees will be available to students over 18.

Blackpool Council hopes the resort will be granted a super casino under the government’s gambling law reforms. The college aims to capitalise on this.

Fruit machine thieves identified

Another story from the BBC:

Police say they know the identities of two men who stole hundreds of pounds from fruit machines in the Isle of Man.

Publicans on the island were warned earlier in the week, after two pubs in Port St Mary were targeted.

In both cases a device was used which interferes with the mechanisms of the machines, emptying the contents.

Officers identified the suspects after liaising with UK police forces, but admitted a lack of evidence meant they would not be pursuing them.

Betting boom boosts Partygaming

Another story from the BBC:

has reported a 65% jump in sales as it racked up a record number of new online players.

The company behind , the world’s biggest online poker room, said group revenue rose to $320m (£180m) in the three months to December.

Partygaming said it signed up 229,277 new poker players during the fourth quarter of 2005, up from just over 180,000 in the previous year.

The firm has been trying to increase its customer base outside the US.

Casino plan touted in resort town

Another story from the BBC:

Plans to set up a major casino in a seaside resort are being considered by council chiefs.

Bournemouth council is looking at applying for government approval for a 150-machine complex in the Dorset town.

Its leaders claim such a casino would create 330 jobs and could be an important tourist attraction.

They are holding public consultation on the plan, saying they are aware there could be concern over the raised profile it would give gambling.

Betting theory behind OAP murder

Another story from the BBC:

Police investigating the murder of a grandmother say the killer may have wrongly believed she had won a large amount of money gambling on horses.

Joyce Sutton was found dead at her home in Skewen, near Neath, on 11 January.

Officers believe Mrs Sutton told people she had a "good win" on the weekend before she died, but her 10p stake had only brought her winnings of £2.10.

Detectives have also asked a person who called them from a Neath telephone box on 13 January to get back in touch.

Fruit machine thieves hit jackpot

Police on the Isle of Man say two gamblers are using a device to "fix" the jackpot on fruit machines.

The pair, thought to be visiting from the UK, are touring pubs with a device which interferes with the mechanisms of slot machines, emptying the contents.

They have tragted two pubs in Port St Mary and police are warning publicans to be on their guard.

The two men are aged about 25 and 40 and of large build. It is thought they are driving a UK-registered car.

Council calls for casino rethink

Another story from the BBC:

Coventry City Council is calling on the government to change its mind over its decision to allow just one Las Vegas- style super casino in the UK.

A number of cities, including Coventry, are competing against each for the right to host the casino.

The city council along with 19 other local authorities wants the government to go back to its original plan to allow eight to be built.

They signed a joint statement to have the number of casino licenses restored.

Report considers casino options

Another story from the BBC:

An independent consultancy has published a report on what it believes the key factors are in deciding where the UK’s super casino should be built.

Blackpool is currently the favourite to host the Las Vegas-style complex.

A decision will be made by the government following a recommendation by the Casino Advisory Panel.

The Europe Economics report said large city authorities, such as Manchester, could have the edge on smaller towns in terms of project management experience.
