MP wants answers over casino bid

Another story from the BBC:

An MP is due to meet the secretary of state for culture to try and revive his city’s bid for a super-casino.

Coventry City Council expressed its shock when its bid was not among eight possible sites chosen in the UK for a Las Vegas-style casino.

MP Geoffrey Robinson said it was a mistake none of the shortlisted sites were in the Midlands and the Casino Advisory Panel should reconsider.

He has arranged to meet Tessa Jowell next week.

The psychology of super-casinos

Another story from the BBC:

BBC News Magazine

Nothing is left to chance with the decor and ambiance of a casino, where everything is designed to encourage gamblers to stay and spend. So what are the tricks? And with plans for a raft of new casinos in the UK, will they be allowed?

The shortlist of towns vying to build the UK’s first "super-casino" - and 16 smaller venues - has been revealed, and competition is fierce.

Anyone who has been to Las Vegas will know that, once through the doors, casinos exude a curiously artificial aura. According to Kati St Clair, a business psychologist, the aim is to induce a trance-like state in gamblers.

Town misses out on ’super-casino’

Another story from the BBC:

A Kent town has missed out on the chance to be the location for Britain’s first Las Vegas-style "super-casino".

Dartford failed to make it to the shortlist of eight possible sites, although it could still succeed in becoming a venue for a smaller casino.

It has applied for one of 16 licences along with Canterbury, and Brighton and Hastings, in Sussex. A final decision is expected to be given in December.

Council leader Jeremy Kite said he was happy with the outcome.
