The Casino Advisory Panel made its recommendation on Tuesday, ending months of speculation over the site.

It comes after it was chosen as one of the eight UK locations earmarked to be licensed to operate a small casino.

Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown said he believed that internet gambling presented a greater danger.

Bishop calls for ‘Blackpool aid’

Another story from the BBC:

Blackpool should be given government aid to revive its fortunes after its super-casino disappointment, according to the Bishop of Blackburn.

The Rt Rev Nicholas Reade said jobs linked to the development would have gone a long way to alleviate some of the poverty in the resort.

East Manchester was named as the home of the UK’s first super-casino.

The Rt Rev Reade said: "This decision seems to me to be a great missed opportunity."

Super-casino: Bonanza for gangs?

Another story from the BBC:

BBC News

Will the first UK super-casino in Manchester provide a bonanza for the street gangs blamed for shootings in the city in recent years?

Opponents of the casino, part of a £265m SportCity leisure development in Beswick, fear there will be an increase in muggings around the site and say it could inspire gangs to move into prostitution, money laundering and extortion.

The fears have been rejected by police and commentators, while the consortium behind the bid say it will regenerate one of the most deprived areas of the country.
