Betting shop staff hurt in attack

A betting shop worker is recovering after being attacked on his way home by two men who tried to force him to return to the shop and open the safe.

The man had locked up the Betfred premises in Blackpool Road, Ribbleton, Lancashire, and was waiting at a bus stop when he was attacked on Sunday.

Police say he was hit over the head by what was believed to be a gun and ordered to return to the bookmakers.

However, he managed to escape and raise the alarm.

Machete robbers threaten staff

Another story from the BBC:

Armed robbers got away with thousands of pounds after threatening staff at a betting shop in Oxford with a machete and a shotgun.

Police said two men entered the Ladbrokes store on Blackbird Leys Road on Saturday night and stole £2,000.

The robbers were wearing balaclavas and one of them a fluorescent jacket.

Det Con Steve Clarke, of Thames Valley Police, said: "This robbery has left the staff shocked and upset, although fortunately no-one was injured."

Gambling plan looks like a winner

Another story from the BBC:

Plans to turn a former post office in the Borders into a bookmakers have been recommended for approval.

The premises in Selkirk’s Market Place closed last year and the business transferred to the High Street.

Bookmaker Kenneth Waugh wants to take over the building and planning officials have said the change of use of the property should be allowed.

However, Selkirk Community Council has voiced concern about such a prominent site being used for a betting shop.
