Gambling debt drove blackmailer

Another story from the BBC:

With words cut out of newspapers and a mysterious fake name, the blackmail letters Philip McHugh sent to Tesco seem like something out of an old detective novel.

McHugh, 52, signed his letters "Arbuthnot, the sign is the spider" and demanded Tesco take out an advert in the Times personal column to communicate with him.

A dead spider was taped to each of the letters, suggesting he was trying to create a calling card for himself.

McHugh also threw in a red herring by planting someone else’s hair under the stamp of one of the threatening letters he posted.

The group said it had secured licences to make a range of products based on the two characters.

The model railway maker, also known for its Scalextric model racing cars, said it had enjoyed "significant growth" in the pre-Christmas trading period.

Sales growth was also strong in Europe, but was less than expected because of delays with new product lines.
