Chinese pair ‘died for scam cash’

A Chinese couple could have been murdered for the money they made from a internet betting scam and selling false qualifications, a court has heard.

The mutilated bodies of Zhen Xing Yang and his girlfriend Xi Zhou, both 25, were discovered in their flat in Croydon Road, Newcastle, on 9 August.

Guang Hui Cao, 30, of Castle Close, Morpeth, Northumberland, denies murder.

Unnecessary violence was used if their killer only meant to steal belongings, Newcastle Crown Court was told.

Spain plans to build casino city

The parliament in the Spanish region of Aragon is due to approve a law that would allow the biggest entertainment and leisure complex in Europe to go ahead.

The Gran Scala project proposes building casino-hotels, theme parks and a racecourse in countryside near the village of Ontinena.

The thirteenth century Church of Saint Mary sits on a hill in the centre of Ontinena, like a beacon for moral guidance.

Small flutter scoops big fortune

A Devon man who won more than £300,000 with a £2 flutter, says he plans to upgrade his wife’s K-reg Metro car.

Tony Wonnacott, 44, from Teignmouth, scooped £310,000 after correctly selecting the winners of six races.

He placed his £2 Scoop 6 bet at Ladbrokes in Teignmouth before going off to watch Exeter City play Morecambe as they pushed for promotion.

"I’ve been shellshocked since I found out last night - I hardly slept a wink," Mr Wonnacott told BBC News.

Firm suspends Irish League bets

Betting on all Irish League games, besides those involving Linfield and Glentoran, has been suspended by one of the UK’s leading bookmakers.

Paddy Power said there had been an usually high number of bets placed on teams which had no chance of winning the league title.

"This isn’t necessarily something sinister," said the bookmaker.

"People on the ground might know that a key player is or isn’t playing or something as simple as that."

Sold Ricoh casino in £1m revamp

The casino at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena is to see a £1m revamp after being sold.

The casino was bought by UK firm Grosvenor Casinos in a £650,000 deal, two months after Isle of Capri Casinos said it would pull out of the site.

Grosvenor Casinos, which is owned by the Rank Group, said the new G Casino would feature traditional games and a new sports bar and restaurant.

Daniel Gidney, chief executive of the Ricoh Area, said it was very good news for the arena and for Coventry.

Reward offered over armed robbery

A £10,000 reward is being offered for information which leads to the conviction of the man responsible for an armed robbery in West Sussex.

The suspect, armed with a hand gun, threatened staff at the Ladbrokes betting shop in Broadwater Street, Worthing, at 2130 BST on 15 April.

The man, who was described as white, fled with a large amount of cash.

Police said he was wearing a black balaclava, a black hooded top, a black zip-up leather jacket and dark jeans.

Gambling measures condemned

Religious groups have condemned a decision by Parliament to allow gambling operators to raise the minimum stakes for slot machines.

The regulations were approved by the House of Lords on Tuesday evening.

The changes mean some stakes will double from 50p to £1, with prize money also increasing in value.

YouTube to stream Hollywood films

Blockbuster films like Casino Royale and Cliffhanger are to become available on YouTube after the company announced a partnership with Sony Pictures.

Better known for music videos and cute kittens, the site wants to expand its library of movies and TV shows.

Deals have also been struck with the likes of MGM, BBC Worldwide, Discovery Communications and National Geographic.

Launch titles are largely older fare like 1980s cop show TJ Hooker, and the service is currently US-only.
