A former police inspector accused of murdering a wealthy widow in 1989 was a gambling addict who went to her home to ask for cash, a court has heard.
Prosecutors allege Kenneth McConnell killed Annabella Symington, 80, by forcing a cardigan sleeve into her mouth to stop her screaming.
Mr McConnell, 58, was said to have discovered the south Belfast pensioner had money after befriending her niece.
The accused, from Prospect Downs in Carrickfergus, was refused bail.

A Kent woman who learnt to play poker four years ago is going into battle in Monte Carlo to try to win £2.2m.
Liv Boeree, 25, from Milstead, near Sittingbourne, won £1.1m earlier this week in a preliminary round in the European Poker Tournament (EPT) event.
TV presenter and model Miss Boeree, an astrophysics graduate from Manchester University, is playing in the final which starts on Sunday in Italy.
She is only the third woman to win an EPT event since the tour began in 2004.

A Surrey nightclub’s plan to install fruit machines with a bumper jackpot has been thwarted by a local authority.
Casino Nightclub wanted to introduce gaming machines which could pay out a top prize of £500.
But Guildford Borough Council said it was concerned about the potentially damaging effect of gambling on vulnerable adults.
Harper’s Leisure International Ltd, which runs the nightclub in Onslow Street, says it will appeal.

Bookmakers in mid-Ulster have been on the alert after spotting an irregular pattern developing in some end-of-season Irish League matches.
Local bookmakers have decided to suspend betting on some games after punters placed unusually high bets.
Particularly high betting was placed on the outcome of a recent Distillery verses Glenavon match which the unfancied Distillery won 3-1.
Glenavon chairman Adrian Teer said the club has launched an internal inquiry.

Two former staff members at Derry City Football Club have been suspended for two months for illegal betting.
Former player Gareth McGlynn and former club physiotherapist, Colum O’Neill admitted breaching betting rules at the Football Association of Ireland’s Independent Disciplinary Committee on Monday.
The bets ranged from £10 to £200.
Last month, another former Derry City player, Sammy Morrow, was suspended for three months for illegal betting.
