Armed raider targets betting shop

Police are hunting a masked raider who held up a betting shop in Uddingston in North Lanarkshire.

The raid happened at about 1815 BST on Tuesday at the Coral bookmakers in Old Edinburgh Road.

A man threatened two members of staff with what appeared to be a firearm and fled with a four-figure sum of cash.

It is believed he escaped in a silver Audi A3 which was waiting outside, driven by a second suspect. Detectives have appealed for witnesses.

Bookmaker threatened with knife

An assistant at a bookmaker’s in Nottingham has been robbed at knifepoint.

A man went into Betfred on Central Avenue in West Bridgford at about 1710 BST on Sunday.

He threatened the worker with a knife before locking him in the toilet and stealing an undisclosed amount of money.

The offender is described as white, 5ft 11in tall, of medium build with fair or ginger hair.

Bookies refuse Irish League bets

Bookmakers in mid-Ulster have been on the alert after spotting an irregular pattern developing in some end-of-season Irish League matches.

Local bookmakers have decided to suspend betting on some games after punters placed unusually high bets.

Particularly high betting was placed on the outcome of a recent Distillery verses Glenavon match which the unfancied Distillery won 3-1.

Glenavon chairman Adrian Teer said the club has launched an internal inquiry.

Man in court on robbery charges

A man has been remanded in custody charged with a series of robberies at bookmakers and banks across Kent.

Gary McMeekin, 35, of Kingswear Gardens, Strood, is accused of carrying out eight armed robberies between 29 November 2009 and 9 April 2010.

A second man, Robert Blackburn, 30, of Copperhouse Road, Rochester, has been charged with two robberies.

Both men were remanded at Medway Magistrates’ Court and will next appear at Maidstone Crown Court on 26 April.

Bookie’s hillside sign dismantled

A huge Hollywood-style sign bearing the name of an Irish bookmaker has been removed from a Cheltenham hillside after a threat of council action.

Paddy Power had the 50ft (15m) letters placed on Cleeve Hill for the Gold Cup Festival which ended on Friday.

Tewkesbury Borough Council threatened proceedings against him because the sign did not have planning permission.

The sign was removed at the weekend and a council spokeswoman said no further action was needed.

Bookmaker warned over huge sign

A bookmaker is being threatened with council action if a giant billboard bearing his name is not removed from a hillside overlooking Cheltenham.

Paddy Power had the 50ft (15m) Hollywood-style sign erected on Cleeve Hill for the Gold Cup Festival.

Tewkesbury Borough Council said the sign did not have planning permission.

The authority said it would begin proceedings on Saturday if the sign was not dismantled immediately after the racing event ends.

Paddy Power hit as punters win

The Irish bookmaker Paddy Power has described 2009 as a "cracking year for punters" after its profits took a dent.

The company reported profits of 67.2m euros ($90.7m; £60.8m) for last year, down 15% from 2008.

Paddy Power suffered as punters enjoyed a series of winning results, especially with bets placed on horse racing and Ireland’s Six Nations rugby grand slam.

Men sought over bookmaker raids

Two men are being sought over a spate of armed robberies at bookmakers in the north and east of Glasgow.

The raids targeted shops in Baillieston, Moodiesburn and Muirhead between 1845 GMT and 2055 GMT on Monday.

Staff were threatened with a firearm and, in total, a three figure sum of cash was taken.

A small, dark-coloured car was used in all of the robberies. Police said that none of the shop staff were injured.

Betting shop death reward raised

Another story from the BBC:

A reward to catch the gunman who shot a teenager in a Manchester betting shop has been increased to £50,000 on the second anniversary of his death.

Louis Brathwaite, 16, was shot in bookmakers on Mauldeth Road West, Withington, on 29 January 2008. He died 12 days later.

His 18-year-old friend was also shot by the gunman but survived.

A police spokesman said the reward would be a "life-changing sum of money" in exchange for vital information.
