Gambling officials search charity

Officials from the Gambling Commission have carried out a search at the office of a Devon charity which helps children with cancer.

Bobby’s Fund, based at Kenn near Exeter, was initially set up to pay for specialist treatment for six-year-old Bobby Wright.

He was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in April 2005, but has been free of the disease for the past two years.

The fund has continued to raise money to help other children.

A bad run for Macau’s casino king

Stanley Ho made his fortune from Macau’s lucrative casino trade but the billionaire has struggled to adapt to the tiny territory’s changing fortunes.

Mr Ho’s firm, Sociedade de Jogos de Macau (SJM), which had a monopoly on gambling for four decades until 2002, has lost out to slicker, foreign rivals who are attempting to transform Macau into Asia’s Las Vegas.

SJM’s share of gambling revenue in the former Portuguese territory, which surpassed the Las Vegas strip in 2006, declined to 40% in 2007 from 75% in 2005, a year after the first foreign company set up shop.

Church opposes casino development

Another story from the BBC:

A Church of Scotland presbytery has decided to oppose plans for a casino in south west Scotland.

The UK Government recently confirmed Stranraer as one of 16 sites where such gambling developments could take place - the only one agreed for Scotland.

The Wigtown and Stranraer presbytery said it feels casinos can bring a "variety of social problems".

Dumfries and Galloway Council has promised wide consultation before it will allow any such plans proceed.

Player reveals gambling addiction

Another story from the BBC:

A long-serving footballer in the West Midlands has admitted having a 16-year gambling addiction which led to him recently considering suicide.

Darren Wrack, 32, who was released by Walsall in May after 10 seasons at the club, said he had gambled away at least £500,000 over the years.

The player is being treated by the Sporting Chance Clinic in Hampshire.

Wrack said he was at "the bottom of the barrel" when he contemplated taking his life several weeks ago.
