Online gambling in the EU can be restricted by national governments, according to a new ruling.
The European Court of Justice found Dutch authorities were right to block their residents from using UK-based Ladbrokes and Betfair’s online betting.
In Holland, the national lottery company holds an exclusive licence to offer sports-related gambling.
As EU laws on online gambling have not been harmonised, the court said the firms’ UK licences were not relevant.

Two armed robbers have raided a betting shop in Surrey.
Police said the men were armed with a hammer and a suspected firearm when they forced into a branch of Ladbrokes in Thames Ditton on Monday evening.
Officers said the pair broke a side door in the shop and smashed a glass screen to get behind the front counter.
They threatened the two members of staff, who suffered minor injuries, before making off with a quantity of cash.
