Bookies’ raid CCTV photos issued

Police have released CCTV pictures of an attempted armed robbery at a betting shop in Cardiff.

One of the men involved threatened the cashier with what is believed to be a shotgun at the Ladbrokes betting shop in Llanedeyrn.

The attempted robbery took place at about 2125 GMT on Tuesday in the shop at the Maelfa shopping centre.

South Wales Police said they have made extra patrols in the area and conducted house-to-house enquiries.

Attempted armed raid on bookies

Two armed men have carried out an attempted late-night robbery at a betting shop in Cardiff.

They say one of the suspects threatened the cashier at the Ladbrokes betting shop in the Llanedeyrn area of the city with what is believed to be a shotgun.

The attempted robbery was at about 2125 GMT on Tuesday, when the men entered the shop at the Maelfa shopping centre.

South Wales Police said both men left after the cashier screamed to a colleague. No-one was injured.

Poker king hits $1m jackpot

A professional player from Belfast is celebrating after scooping the $1m jackpot at a tournament in London at the weekend.

Marty Smyth has earned more than $3.5m throughout his card playing career but claiming the top spot in the Ladbrokes Million VII is his biggest win so far.

It was an unlikely victory, as he had to claw his way back into the reckoning after making a disastrous start to the championship.

"I got off to a bad start - I played a big hand and thought I was winning but it turns out I wasn’t," he said.

Iron bars used in bookmaker raid

Two armed robbers threatened workers at a bookmaker’s shop in west Cumbria with iron bars.

The men took cash in the raid at Ladbrokes on High Street in Cleator Moor on Thursday.

The staff members were uninjured but left "deeply shaken" by their ordeal, police said.

The robbers, who were both wearing hooded tops, ran off towards Duke Street after the raid. Two men were later arrested on suspicion of robbery.

Betting dispute man wins £10,500

A man who thought he had won £20,000 after Manchester United won the European Cup has been awarded half by the betting company after a dispute.

Roy Thomas claimed he specified the club would win three trophies, but Ladbrokes insisted the bet did not include the Community Shield match.

The Bristol man will now get £10,500 from the company.

Mr Thomas, who has been betting since he was 18, said: "This is the first time I have ever had any real trouble."

CCTV image issued after robbery

Police have issued a CCTV image in an appeal to find an armed robber who struck at a betting shop in Essex.

A man entered the Ladbrokes shop, in Church Hill, Loughton, armed with a knife, demanding money from the tills.

He made off on foot with a sum of cash after the incident at 1900 BST on Wednesday 24 September.

The man is described as white, 5ft 11in tall, with a stocky build and auburn curly hair and facial stubble. He was wearing an olive green hat with flaps.

Ladbrokes staff strike over pay

Staff at a Ladbrokes betting call centre on Merseyside are staging a 24-hour walkout in a row over pay.

The union Usdaw said hundreds of workers at the site in Aintree were set to strike from 0500 BST on Sunday.

It said staff were unhappy after being offered what they said was a below-inflation pay rise of 3%.

A spokesman for Ladbrokes, which also has a call centre in London, said the strike action had had "absolutely no impact on services".
