‘Stupid’ Vegas plan thief jailed

Another story from the BBC:

A Devon man who flew to Las Vegas to play when he should have been doing unpaid community work has been sentenced to three months in prison.

Scott Henry was told by the judge at Exeter Crown Court: "If there was a sentence for stupidity you would be serving life imprisonment."

Henry, 23, of Abbey Crescent, Torquay, had been given a community order after admitting a raid on a nightclub.

The court heard he flew to the US in the hope of making money playing poker.

Conviction in poker case upheld

Another story from the BBC:

The Court of Appeal has upheld a landmark decision by a jury that is a game where chance and luck predominates the player’s skill.

Last January Snaresbrook Crown Court convicted Derek Kelly, 46, of running unlicensed poker games and breaching two counts of the 1968 Gaming Act.

Kelly appealed on the grounds that the trial judge had misdirected the jury during his summing up.

But the appeal court judges disagreed and dismissed the appeal.
