Cars in rail ‘Russian roulette’

Another story from the BBC:

The driving test should have compulsory questions on level crossings to cut the number of drivers who take risks on them each year, Network Rail has said.

It said there were 14 crashes and 13 deaths in 2009 and 140 near misses between vehicles and trains.

The rail operator recorded 3,200 incidents of misuse, but said the actual figure was likely to be higher.

Network Rail said questions in the test would help drivers start out with good habits on negotiating level crossings.

Georgia ‘link’ between gambling and drugs

Another story from the BBC:

With just weeks to go until a controversial new law on casinos takes effect in Georgia, health workers in the capital, Tbilisi, say they have uncovered a worrying link between gambling and drug addiction. Tom Esslemont reports.

It’s the middle of the afternoon and Tbilisi’s busiest casino, the Ajara, is already packed with gamblers.

It is full of grizzled chain-smoking men. They sit hunched at tables under gaudy crystal chandeliers chatting over the din of lounge music and the constant whirl of wheels.

Managers at the Ajara say they receive 1,100 clients every day.

Patient’s anger over cancelled op

Another story from the BBC:

A woman whose operation was cancelled three times in three days has accused a Portsmouth hospital of playing "Russian " with her life.

Yvonne Rogers, 59, of Southsea, had acute pancreatitis and was due to have her gall bladder removed at the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham in May.

The surgery has not been rescheduled and Miss Rogers has now complained.

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust said it was reviewing the case "as a matter of urgency".
