Firearm offences gambler jailed

Another story from the BBC:

A gambling addict from Wearside has been jailed for two years after admitting firearms and drugs charges.

An antique pistol was found when police raided the Houghton-le-Spring home of Graham Calvert. He also had a shotgun without a certificate.

His barrister said they were to protect him from creditors who would use "unorthodox" methods to get cash back.

The 29-year-old greyhound trainer is appealing against a ruling that was not liable for his £2m losses.

Gambler appeals over £2m losses

Another story from the BBC:

A compulsive gambler has gone to the Court of Appeal in the latest round of his battle to force bookmaker to repay his £2m losses.

Greyhound trainer Graham Calvert, 28, of Houghton-le-Spring, near Sunderland told the High Court in February the company failed in its "duty of care".

The judge agreed, but ruled William Hill was not liable for the losses.

Mr Calvert’s QC said on Thursday that, on the facts found by the High Court judge, his client should have won.
